Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Melissa Miller-Waters

Posted April 4th, 2011 by Janie Blitch

Melissa Miller-WatersCongratulations to Professor Melissa Miller-Waters who returns to HCC-Northwest with a newly acquired Ph.D. in English and American Literature from the University of Houston. Proficient in Blackboard Vista and the Learning Web, Miller-Waters uses technology to engage her students in English 1301, English 1302, and Women in Literature courses. Her Learning Web site contains useful information and links for students and faculty. This semester, she contributes as a member of the Instructional Technology New Media Seminar for faculty and staff.

In class, Miller-Waters enjoys “lively large and small group discussions driven by engaged students,” but she worries about students’ lack of access to academic technological tools. Therefore, she encourages students to visit Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab (OWL) and Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing via Learning Web links on her site. To increase her own “technological savvy,” Miller-Waters has requested a workshop on Smart Board technology.

Eagle Online Replaces Blackboard in 2011-12

Posted April 4th, 2011 by Jordan Carswell

HCC has rebranded its online learning management system (LMS) as “Eagle Online”. With this change comes a new learning platform based on the popular open source software learning platforms, Moodle.

The training for Eagle Online started in March 2011 with a Train the Trainers session. On March 22, power users selected from each college were invited to preview the LMS. System-wide training will begin April 26, 2011 for faculty teaching this summer.

By January 2012, HCC will say “bye” to Blackboard Vista and will be moved entirely to Eagle Online.
