Faculty Spotlight: Janie Blitch

Posted June 3rd, 2011 by Janie Blitch

Janie Blitch, a veteran adjunct faculty member for the English, Philosophy, and Communications Department, also serves as the Faculty Mentor for the Northwest College Curriculum Innovation Centers.Since 2009, she has provided faculty and staff opportunities to increase technological skills. She particularly enjoys helping new faculty members navigate the various HCC systems, particularly the Learning Web.

As Janie explains, “The CIC is the technological ‘front door’ for faculty and staff. In a recent pilot program, Carrol, David, and I assisted a record number of faculty members who now have active Learning Web sites. These instructors now comply with state legislative mandates that require public access to each faculty member’s curriculum vitae and syllabi. Currently, Carrol and I are immersing ourselves in the new LMS, Eagle Online, which will replace Blackboard Vista totally in 2012. David is the graphics ‘go-to’ guy.”

Janie has experience with regular, dual credit, and early college English classes. Therefore, she particularly understands the unique challenges for instructors on a high school or separate campus. “My goal is to work more closely with faculty who seldom come to an HCC campus but interact with high school students who are also HCC Northwest students.” If faculty members are aware of the services that HCC offers, such as the Learning Web, Eagle Online, and the HCCS Library Databases, their students will enjoy a college-level experience, and everyone will benefit from less paper-based instruction.”

Janie works on projects to modernize and update web-based academic access for faculty and students alike. She is available for individual and small group appointments outside the regular CIC hours. Furthermore, she will visit departmental meetings.

In her spare time, Janie teaches group fitness classes at several locations, and she supports the Houston Dynamo soccer team as a member of the Fan Advisory Board.
